May 19, Kim Beyer-Nelson, Guest Speaker

Topic: Buddhism

Kim continues her Comparative Religion series with Buddhism:  “I love the title of a relatively recent book:  Buddhism:  It’s Not What You Think because it points to the comprehensive and living nature of this non-theistic tradition."  Kim will invite you into the structure of the life-practice that is Buddhism, touching on its history and its role in the future of religion in the United States.

Suggested gentle introductory texts for further inquiry:
The Wise Heart by Jack Kornfield
Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind by Suzuki Roshi
The Miracle of Mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hahn
The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Songyal Rinpoche

June 2, Joseph Bedarnik, Guest Speaker, from Quimper UU Fellowship

Topic: Faith in our sUUperpower

It's an old joke: In front of Unitarian Universalist churches, the KKK burns question marks. By the light of those fires, we'll explore what it is to ask burning questions, search for meaning, and cultivate the sUUperpower of liberal religion.

June 16, Kim Beyer-Nelson, Guest Speaker

Topic: Islam

Kim continues her Comparative Religion series with Islam.  Beyond media dogma and radical denaturing of the faith, what is it about Islam that breathes with hope, deep spiritual support and joy? Step into the core of one of the fastest growing religions in our world today, and experience the history, central practices and elegant philosophy and poetic voice that informs this tradition.

Suggested gentle introductory texts for further inquiry:
The Heart of Islam by Seyyed Hossein Nasr
The Fragrance of Faith by Jamal Rahman
The Light of Dawn: Daily readings from the Holy Qur’an by Camille Adams Helminski
A Year with Rumi by Coleman Barks

July 7,  Elizabeth Bukey, Ministerial Student

July 21, Kim Beyer-Nelson, Guest Speaker

Topic: The Gospel of Thomas

Kim' Comparative Religion series wraps up with the Gospel of Thomas.  Part of the 1945 archeological find we know as the Nag Hammadi Library, the Gospel of Thomas illustrates for us a very different face of the man known as Jesus or Yeshua.  Thought to capture the inner experience of this great wisdom teacher, the Gospel of Thomas is haunting, paradoxical and finally breathtaking in its vision that all are called into participation with the radical monotheism that infuses all matter. Kim will focus on some of the central messages, as well as the very literary construction of the Gospel that belies claims that it is a “primitive” Christian text.

Suggested gentle introductory texts for further inquiry:
The Gospel of Thomas: Wisdom of the Twin, second edition by Lynn Bauman
Beyond Belief by Elaine Pagels
The Nag Hammadi Scriptures: The Revised and Updated Translation of Sacred Gnostic Texts Complete in One Volume Marvin W. Meyer and James M. Robinson
